What’s New in the Respite Program?
This spring our Recreational Respite Program for children with Autism will offer bowling, which is a new activity. This activity will assist the children with balance, body awareness and developing a sense of teamwork. We are seeking Fee Sponsors to assist with the costs to continue to provide this specialized program. You can donate through PayPal or send a check to Abrazos Family Support Services. Thank you for your support!
Community Group Activities for Families with Infants & Toddlers
This winter, we are offering one community group activity each month to give all children in our program an opportunity to improve their communication and play skills with other children. These group activities also provide parents with an opportunity to meet and socialize with other parents. You must sign up for all group activities at least one week prior to the date of the activity. You can sign up from this page or you can complete the sign-up form and mail it to our office.
HEARING Screening Available
Abrazos conducts hearing screening with newly referred children during their initial evaluations. We are also available to do hearing screenings by appointment at our offices, in your home or at the Rio Rancho Shining Stars Preschool Child Find event on Saturday mornings (Feb. 11, Mar. 3, Mar. 11). There is no cost to families for this service. If you would like to have your child’s hearing screened, please call our office (867-3396) or talk to your Service Coordinator to schedule an appointment. Please be aware that we cannot screen your child’s hearing if she/he has a cold or is sick.
Starting in February: Developmental Play group and Toddler Movement group
Below is a brief description of each group. A brochure with a registration form for each group is available from our staff and below with more specific information about these small group activities. We want to thank the MOMS Club of Rio Rancho-Cottonwood who gave us a donation to fund scholarships for five children to participate in the Toddler Movement group.
Developmental Play group: Children learn to play and communicate with other children while parents learn activities to prepare their child for preschool. Two year olds typically benefit the most from this group. The group is for the child enrolled in our program and one parent/caregiver. Click here to open the brochure and registration form. Registration Deadline: January 23, 2012.
Toddler Movement group: Children learn movement and listening skills while parents learn activities to help their child improve their movement skills. Children who have started walking benefit the most from this group. This group is for the child enrolled in our program and one parent/caregiver. Click here to open the brochure and registration form. Registration Deadline: January 27, 2012.
Notifying Us to Cancel an Appointment:
- Please call our main number 867-3396 and leave a message with the operator when you need to cancel an appointment for an individual session or group activity.
- Call as soon as you know that you cannot make a scheduled appointment.
- If your child wakes up sick or is sick the day before, call us immediately.
Tips for Appointments During Cold and Flu Season
- It is best to reschedule appointments when your children are sick. When they don’t feel well, children do not feel good about learning a difficult or new skill and are likely to become frustrated or discouraged.
- When your child is sick, our staff can still meet with you to answer questions about your child’s development or provide you with activities or information about resources that are beneficial.
- Even though we disinfect all our toys and materials, our workers do catch the flu and colds. We do not allow them to work when they are ill and ask that they call you to reschedule.
